WEEK 6 · 3 HOURS

Skimming, Scanning and Time Control

Focus: Reading speed · strategy selection

Use skimming and scanning strategically without sacrificing comprehension.

Hour 1Input & inference
Hour 2Strategy & interaction
Hour 3Simulation & reflection
HOUR 1 · Input & Strategic Comprehension 60 MIN
Build comprehension before answering under test pressure.
1A · Academic Vocabulary
skimming
lectura global
Skim to identify main idea and structure.
scanning
búsqueda específica
Scan for names, dates or key terms.
close reading
lectura detallada
Read difficult evidence carefully.
pace
ritmo
Control reading pace.
time limit
límite de tiempo
Set a reasonable time limit.
priority
prioridad
Prioritize information needed for the question.
locate
localizar
Locate evidence efficiently.
monitor
monitorear
Monitor time during the test.
1B · Visual Strategy

Read differently depending on the task

SKIMMING gives the general structure and main idea. SCANNING locates specific information. CLOSE READING analyzes difficult sections. Efficient test-taking means switching strategies rather than reading every line at the same speed.

Example 1

Skim for general structure.

Example 2

Scan for specific information.

Example 3

Close-read evidence for difficult inference or logic questions.

1C · Inferential Listening

Question: When should a student use skimming, scanning and close reading?

Efficient readers do not process every sentence with the same intensity. They may skim a passage to understand its organization, scan for a specific detail and then read one paragraph carefully to evaluate an inference. Time control improves when strategy matches the question.
Hour 1 · Submit
HOUR 2 · Strategy & Academic Interaction 60 MIN
Apply the strategy through dialogue, classification and justification.
2A · Guided Dialogues
Dialogue 1
Teacher: You spent five minutes reading every word.
Student: I should have skimmed first.
Dialogue 2
Laura: The question asks for a date.
Daniel: Then scan instead of rereading the whole passage.
Dialogue 3
Mateo: This inference depends on paragraph four.
Sara: Now close-read that section.
2B · Interactive Practice
Choose the strategy
Hour 2 · Submit
HOUR 3 · Timed Application, Quiz & Reflection 60 MIN
3A · Saber 11 Strategy Challenge

PC Challenge: Write a short analysis: identify the question type, strategy, evidence and one likely distractor.
